The issues of Severance Pay (known in Korean as Taechikum 대지금금) for foreign workers is one of the most common issues of contention with employers. Severance regulations apply equally to Korean and Foreign workers.
May 2010 NOTE: As of 2011, companies will decide individually if they wish to continue the severance pay system for their employees or adopt a Defined Contribution-type Pension or Defined Benefit-type Pension. If the company does decide to move from the severance system to a pension system, it will need to obtain the consent of its labor union(s) or a majority of its employees. How this will affect foreign employees remains to be seen.
Also, it has been announced that as of 2011, companies with less than 5 employees will have to have a severance system - currently they do not.
However, no specific policies/regulations have been adopted as yet.
